Pay the CAA Fee

Search for "CAA online medical fee".

This fee is paid each time a medical is applied for. Even if you are applying for multiple classes, you only pay one CAA fee. The money goes to the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority), a government body.

You must pay this and enter the receipt number into SkyCert before you can sign your application in SkyCert.

You must enter and sign your CAA application form several days before you go for your medical. Your medical examiner will want to look at your application form the day before you come.

Once you have the receipt, upload it into SkyCert. Scan it as a PDF in black and white (not colour and not greyscale).

Start Your Medical

If you are not already signed up to SkyCert click here to sign up. You must know your CAA ID number.

You cannot start your medical with the medical examiner without having filled out and signed your application form in SkyCert.

To assist you and your medical examiner, aim to have your SkyCert application filled out and signed in SkyCert several days before your medical.

To start a new medical click here.

Choose a Practice

At the moment not all Medical Examiners are on SkyCert. SkyCert is a new system, and we are setting up new Medical examiners. Click here to see which medical examiners are registered. You need to choose their Practice Name in SkyCert not the Doctor name.

If your medical is not due yet you can still set yourself up in SkyCert. We are writing an automatic reminder system that will work on the expiry dates you for your classes. You need to enter these the first time in SkyCert. You can also start filling out your paperless application form in SkyCert now. You can then enter anything that comes up between medicals while you remember. Don't sign the form until several days before your actual aviation medical.

When you chose a medical practice in the manage your profile section you allow that practice to see your current medical in SkyCert along with your past ones done in SkyCert. If you are new to SkyCert there are no previous medicals in SkyCert for you. We are not importing previous ones from the CAA.

What Will I Need

You need more for your first medical than your renewals. What you need for your renewal depends on your age.

Your medical examiner may also have required you to have extra tests for your next medical. Check the letter and A4 MAR you were given at your last medical. Go prepared.

Use the SkyCert Age Chart available for download from here to work out what you need.

Find the age row when you did your last medical (e.g. the yellow row). Find the row for your age now (e.g. the green row).

You will need the tests between the yellow and green lines, including those on the green line.

See here for examples using the SkyCert Age Chart.

Blood Test

You will need fasting lipids and either fasting glucose or HbA1c. Fasting means no food or drink, except for water, for 10 - 16 hours.

You can request a lab form from your GP or your medical examiner. You can use results that are up to 12 months old. If you have these, upload them into SkyCert.

If you are on blood pressure or other medication, you may need to do extra blood tests - check with your medical examiner. Check also your previous MAR and certificate issue letter to see if there is anything extra needed.

SkyCert can provide a lab form after you have signed your application inside SkyCert. The lab will charge you for this pilot blood test.

Once you have the report, upload it into SkyCert. Scan it as a black and white PDF (not colour and not greyscale).

Audiogram

This is a hearing test done on the CAA Audiometry form. Refer to the SkyCert Age Chart for when it is needed.

Check to see if your medical examiner does audiograms - some do. Otherwise search for "audiologists". You do not need a CAA approved one. They must use the CAA form.

Once you have the report, upload it into SkyCert. Scan it as a black and white PDF (not colour and not greyscale).

Special Eye Report

Mostly only done for your first class 1 or 3 medical.

Search for "CAA approved optometrists".  They must be approved by the CAA, and they must use the CAA Special Eye Report form.

Once you have the report, upload it into SkyCert so your medical examiner can access it. Scan it as a black and white PDF (not colour and not greyscale).

Things to Take With You

You must have filled out and signed your application in SkyCert several days before you go for your medical.

Take:

  • Your passport or New Zealand drivers licence.
  • Your CAA fee receipt.
  • If you wear glasses, take your spare pair as well.
  • If you wear contact lenses, take them but do not wear them.
  • You will need your SkyCert password, and preferably a device to access it, e.g. a smart phone.

You do not need to fast when you see the doctor for your medical.

It is not compulsory to have the blood, audiometry, and eye reports done before your medical, You can do them afterwards.

You will need to go to provide a urine sample when you go for your medical. So hold on :)

Tips for an Easy Medical

1. Book Early

The medical examiner is allowed to see you up to 30 days early, and then forward date your new medical certificate to start up to 30 days in future.

Avoid the stress of it running out tomorrow or the medical examiner being booked out for weeks in advance.

2. Be Organised

Don't go for your medical without having:

  • Paid the CAA fee - see here.
  • Choosing the medical practice from the list in SkyCert.
  • Entering your current certificate dates in your SkyCert profile.
  • Filling out and signing your application in SkyCert days in advance.
  • Uploading documents you have and need into SkyCert.

When you go for your medical it is to do the medical, not the paperwork.

Good News

Your future medicals in SkyCert are easy because SkyCert remembers what you type in. You do not have to retype your previous history in your next application :)

SkyCert will remind you before your next medical is due. However it is still your responsibility to keep your medical current if something were to go wrong with an automatic reminder.

You can look up your previous medicals on SkyCert any time you want.

You choose which medical examiner practice can see your current and previous medicals in SkyCert. "You Have Control".

We trust that you enjoy SkyCert and that it helps you.
